The Future of Self-Driving Mini Buses

The Future of Self-Driving Mini Buses

Launched in 2020 by ALTEN, self-driving minibuses have already transported nearly 18,000 passengers. They offer practical transportation benefits and contribute to research on improving user experience, efficiency, and public transport infrastructure.

The Ride the Future project initiated in Linköping features two autonomous electric buses. It now offers an on-demand service where passengers can select their pick-up and drop-off points via the app or website. Each shuttle, which can accommodate up to six passengers, operates under the supervision of a safety driver and travels at a slow and secure pace, emphasising passenger safety.

This innovative research explores how these self-driving shuttles can supplement public transportation, aiming to reduce car dependency while making transit more competitive. The initiative also examines the practicalities of integrating autonomous buses into everyday life, improving their role in public transit while meeting diverse user needs.

More than 30 research studies have been made to investigate multiple aspects of autonomous transport and find an easier solution for people with special needs. The collaborating partners include the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), Linköping University (LiU), Östgötatrafiken, Transdev, Akademiska hus, RISE, and Linköping Municipality.
